DESCRIPTION

Hoplias unitaeniatus – Gold Wolf Fish

The Gold Wolf Fish is an aggressive, predatory characin prized for its metallic gold-to-bronze coloration and powerful, torpedo-shaped body. Native to South America, this species is built for ambush hunting — armed with a wide mouth, strong jaws, and serious attitude. Unlike many community fish, the Gold Wolf Fish is a true predator, best suited for experienced keepers who understand large, territorial species.

In the right setup, they become bold, interactive, and highly food-driven. This is a fish that commands respect and instantly becomes the focal point of any predator aquarium.

Adult Size

  • Typically reaches 12–16 inches, sometimes larger with proper care.

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 125 gallons

  • Recommended: 180 gallons or larger

  • Larger footprint tanks are strongly preferred due to their territorial nature.

Aquascape Tips:

  • Open swimming space with minimal clutter

  • Strong lid (they can be powerful and reactive)

  • Dim lighting preferred

  • Stable décor — they may move or bump into loose objects

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • GH: 3–12 dGH

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: Keep under 20–30 ppm

They are hardy but still require excellent filtration and consistent maintenance due to heavy feeding and waste production.

Tank Mates

This species is not community safe. Tank mates must be chosen carefully.

Possible tank mates (with caution):

  • Large, robust cichlids of similar size

  • Large plecos (armored species)

  • Other similarly sized aggressive predator fish (in very large systems only)

Avoid:

  • Smaller fish (will be eaten)

  • Slow or timid species

  • Long-finned fish

  • Multiple Gold Wolf Fish in smaller tanks (high aggression risk)

In most cases, they do best solo or in very carefully planned predator systems.

Feeding

Strict carnivore.

  • High-quality carnivore pellets

  • Pieces of shrimp, tilapia, smelt

  • Earthworms

  • Occasional whole prey items (clean source only)

Avoid feeder fish to prevent parasites and nutritional imbalance.

Temperament & Care Notes

  • Highly territorial

  • Powerful bite — use caution during maintenance

  • Intelligent and responsive to feeding routines

  • Best suited for experienced aquarists

The Gold Wolf Fish is for serious predator enthusiasts who want a bold, muscular South American hunter with presence and attitude. In the right setup, it’s an absolute showpiece fish.
