DESCRIPTION

Zebrina Pike Cichlid (Crenicichla zebrina)

The Zebrina Pike Cichlid is a rare and highly sought-after species known for its elongated, torpedo-shaped body and bold zebra-like striping. Native to the fast-flowing waters of the Xingu River in Brazil, this species is built for speed and precision, making it one of the most impressive predatory cichlids in the hobby. With its striking pattern, aggressive feeding response, and commanding presence, the Zebrina Pike is a true centerpiece for advanced aquarists.

Diet

Zebrina Pike Cichlids are carnivorous predators:

  • Frozen foods (silversides, shrimp, krill)
  • Live foods (fish, worms — use sparingly)
  • Can be trained onto high-quality pellets

A protein-rich diet is essential for growth and maintaining condition.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 125–180 gallons
  • Water Type: Freshwater
  • Temperature: 76–82°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Setup: Sandy substrate with rocks and driftwood; moderate to strong flow; secure hiding spots

They prefer river-style setups with current and structure.

Size

  • Current Sale Size: Typically 3–6 inches

Max Size

  • Maximum Adult Size: 10–12 inches

Tank Mates

Due to their predatory and territorial nature:

  • Compatible: Large, semi-aggressive fish such as datnoids, larger cichlids, catfish, and bichirs
  • Use caution: With similarly shaped fish (may trigger aggression)
  • Avoid: Small fish or passive species

Tank mates should be robust and similar in size.

Temperament

Aggressive and territorial, especially as they mature. Fast, intelligent hunters with strong feeding responses.

āš ļø Important Note

This species can be highly territorial and is best suited for experienced hobbyists with properly sized tanks and compatible tank mates.
