Description:
The Goonch Catfish, scientifically known as Bagarius yarrelli, is one of the most powerful and intimidating freshwater predators available in the aquarium trade. Native to fast-flowing rivers across India and Nepal, this species is built for life in strong currents, with a flattened body, wide head, and immense strength. Juveniles may appear manageable, but this fish quickly develops into a massive apex predator that demands serious space and experience. The Goonch is best suited for advanced hobbyists with large, specialized setups.

Diet:
Carnivorous predator.

• Eats fish, shrimp, worms, pellets and other meaty foods
• Feed 2–3 times per week depending on size

Behavior:

• Highly predatory — will consume any fish it can overpower or swallow
• Primarily bottom-dwelling but very powerful and active, especially at feeding time
• Best kept alone or with fish of the same size

Max Size:

• Up to 6 feet (180 cm) in the wild
• Can still exceed 3–4 feet in captivity under proper conditions

Tank Mates:

• May coexist with other large species

Tank Size:

• Minimum: 300+ gallons for 15"-16" fish
• Recommended: Indoor pond or 1,000+ gallons for adults
• Requires strong filtration, high oxygenation, and moderate to strong water flow to replicate natural river conditions
