DESCRIPTION

Kner’s Chinese Perch (Siniperca kneri) is a rare and highly sought-after freshwater predator closely related to the more common Chinese Perch. Known for its intricate camouflage pattern and stealthy hunting style, this species is a true ambush specialist—remaining motionless before striking prey with incredible speed.

More uncommon in the hobby, S. kneri is prized by collectors looking for something different within the Asian predator category.

Max Size

  • 10–14 inches in captivity
  • More compact than S. chuatsi, but equally predatory

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 75–90 gallons (juvenile)
  • Recommended: 125–180+ gallons for adults
  • Provide structure and open ambush zones

Tank Mates

  • Highly predatory
  • Best with:
    • Similar-sized, robust fish
    • Other monster fish (with caution)
  • Avoid:
    • Small fish (will be eaten)
    • Slow or passive species

Diet

Strict carnivore:

  • Live feeder fish (often required initially)
  • Frozen fish, shrimp, and worms (can be trained over time)
  • Rarely accepts pellets

👉 Feeding can be challenging—best suited for experienced hobbyists

Care & Behavior

  • Ambush predator—prefers hiding spots and low light
  • Can be shy during acclimation
  • Requires excellent water quality and strong filtration
  • Less active swimmer—bursts of speed when feeding

Why We Love Them

  • Rare alternative to standard Chinese Perch
  • Unique camouflage and patterning
  • Intense predator behavior
  • Perfect for Asian predator setups

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Not beginner-friendly
  • Often requires live feeding initially
  • Extremely predatory—tank mates must be carefully selected
  • Sensitive to poor water quality
