The Turkana Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) is a hardy and fascinating prehistoric species originating from the Lake Turkana region of East Africa. This variant is especially prized for its subtle coloration, often displaying soft gray, silver, or slightly earthy tones, combined with the speciesβ signature elongated body and segmented dorsal finlets.
Known for their primitive appearance and unique behavior, Senegal bichirs possess both gills and a functional lung, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air. Their slow, deliberate movements and ability to βwalkβ along the substrate make them an engaging and unusual addition to the aquarium.
Senegal bichirs are durable and adaptable, making them an excellent choice for both intermediate and experienced aquarists.
A tight-fitting lid is essential, as bichirs are notorious escape artists. Provide moderate filtration and maintain stable water conditions.
Carnivorous and opportunistic feeders.
They rely heavily on scent to locate food and are most active during evening hours.
Use soft substrate with driftwood, rocks, and shaded areas. Leave open bottom space for foraging.
Generally peaceful with appropriately sized tank mates.
They can be kept with other bichirs if space allows.
The Turkana Senegal Bichir is a resilient, prehistoric oddball that combines unique behavior with easygoing care requirements. Its calm demeanor and distinctive appearance make it a perfect addition to a wide range of freshwater setups.
