DESCRIPTION

Tometes sp. “Green Red Spot” — Brazil

A rare Brazilian serrasalmid with subtle color and serious river power

Tometes sp. “Green Red Spot” is an unusual, currently unidentified form of Tometes originating from Brazil. Its standout feature is the combination of a muted green-to-olive metallic body with scattered pinkish-red spots and irregular blotches across the flanks. As the fish matures and settles in, these markings can become increasingly noticeable against the reflective body coloration.

Members of the genus Tometes are specialized South American serrasalmids closely related to silver dollars and pacu. They are strongly associated with fast-flowing rivers, rapids, and rocky habitats, where their deep bodies and powerful fins allow them to hold position against heavy current. Described Tometes species are primarily herbivorous and are adapted for feeding on aquatic vegetation and other plant material found in these high-flow environments.

Because the “Green Red Spot” form has not yet been formally identified to species, its exact adult size, distribution, and species-specific characteristics should be considered uncertain. Other Tometes can develop reddish coloration or irregular red markings, particularly as they mature, making this form especially interesting from both an aquarium and taxonomic standpoint.

Aquarium Setup

Minimum Tank Size: 300+ gallons for long-term housing
Temperature: 75–82°F
pH: 6.0–7.5
Diet: Primarily herbivorous — leafy greens, vegetables, algae-based foods, quality pellets, and occasional supplemental foods
Temperament: Generally peaceful but powerful and active
Adult Size: Currently uncertain; expect a large, deep-bodied fish typical of the genus
Origin: Brazil
Scientific Name: Tometes sp. “Green Red Spot”

Strong filtration, high dissolved oxygen, and plenty of swimming room are recommended. Moderate-to-strong water movement can help replicate the flowing-water environments naturally occupied by Tometes.

With its metallic green body, delicate red spotting, rarity, and unresolved scientific identity, Tometes sp. “Green Red Spot” is a true collector fish and an especially exciting species for keepers interested in unusual South American serrasalmids.
