Premium Grade Short Body Delhezi Bichir (Polypterus delhezi)
The Premium Grade Short Body Delhezi Bichir is an exceptionally rare and highly desirable variant of Polypterus delhezi, combining the species’ iconic barred pattern with a compact, deep-bodied appearance that is seldom seen in the aquarium hobby. Its shortened body gives it a powerful, stocky profile while retaining the distinctive vertical banding and prehistoric features that have made Delhezi Bichirs a favorite among collectors. Premium Grade specimens are carefully selected for superior body structure, pattern quality, and overall health.
Native to the Congo River Basin, Delhezi Bichirs are hardy, nocturnal predators that spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the aquarium. Despite their ancient appearance, they are surprisingly active and intelligent, often recognizing feeding routines and interacting with their surroundings. The short body form is significantly less common than standard specimens, making high-quality examples especially sought after by bichir enthusiasts.
While standard Delhezi Bichirs can exceed 14 inches, short body specimens typically remain noticeably more compact while developing a thicker, more robust build. They thrive in spacious aquariums with secure lids, subdued lighting, and plenty of caves, driftwood, or other hiding places. Their unique appearance, rarity, and prehistoric charm make the Premium Grade Short Body Delhezi Bichir a true centerpiece fish and an outstanding addition to any serious oddball or predator aquarium.
