The Holy Grail of loaches, the royal clown loach, is a species of botiid fish found in flowing water in the upper and middle Yangtze basin in China. It is a smaller loach as compared to the imperial flower loach, reaching approximately 8 inches. Predominantly a riverine loach favoring clear, well-oxygenated, running water with substrates of rocks and gravel. Often present in bedrock and boulder-filled headwater streams but also found in larger, turbidriver channels.
Bold pattern with river personality
The Holy Grail of loaches, the Royal Clown Loach is a striking Chinese river loach known for its dramatic contrast and active bottom-dwelling behavior. A warm golden to bronze base is crossed with bold, irregular black banding that gives it a βroyalβ patterned look. As the fish matures, the coloration deepens and the pattern becomes more defined, especially under moderate lighting.
Native to fast-moving river systems in China, Leptobotia pellegrini thrives in clean, oxygen-rich water with steady current. Unlike the common Clown Loach, this species stays more streamlined and carries a more river-built profile. It is highly social and active, constantly exploring the substrate, weaving through rockwork, and interacting with tank mates.
Growing to approximately 8β10 inches, the Royal Clown Loach becomes a substantial bottom presence in larger community or river-style predator setups.
