DESCRIPTION

Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus)

The Redtail Catfish is one of the most iconic and powerful freshwater predators in the aquarium trade. Instantly recognizable by its massive body, broad head, and vibrant red-orange tail, this species is a true centerpiece fish. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, Redtails are fast-growing giants best suited for very large aquariums or indoor ponds. This species is recommended for advanced hobbyists due to its size and feeding demands.

Diet

Redtail Catfish are opportunistic carnivores with a massive appetite. Their diet should include:

  • Sinking carnivore pellets (staple)
  • Fresh or frozen foods (shrimp, fish fillets, worms)
  • Occasional whole prey items (tilapia, smelt)

⚠️ Avoid overfeeding and limit live feeder fish, as they can introduce disease and lead to poor nutrition.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 300+ gallons (juveniles), 1,000+ gallons or pond recommended for adults
  • Water Type: Freshwater
  • Temperature: 72–80Β°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Setup: Open swimming space with minimal dΓ©cor; strong filtration is essential due to heavy bioload

These fish grow extremely fast and require serious long-term planning.

Size

  • Current Sale Size: Typically 3–8 inches

Max Size

  • Maximum Adult Size: 4–5 feet (48–60 inches)
  • Can exceed 100lbs in optimal conditions

Tank Mates

Redtail Catfish will eat anything that fits in their mouth, so tank mates must be chosen carefully:

  • Compatible: Large, robust species such as arowanas, stingrays, datnoids, pacu, and large cichlids
  • Use caution: Even large tank mates may eventually be eaten or injured
  • Avoid: Small to medium fish, slow-moving species

Temperament

Generally calm but highly predatory. Not aggressive in the traditional sense, but extremely opportunistic feeders.

Insurance

will cover shipping cost and live arrival guarantee outside of our normal shipping policy. This means we will compensate you for any fish that died in transit and the associated shipping costs that occurred from shipping delays, damage or loss of package by shipping carrier. If shipment is late or damaged, but fish is alive, then you can claim for the shipping cost. All claims must be made within 2 hrs of receiving the package. A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface. Claims may be denied if you fail to provide sufficient proof that clearly demonstrates loss. All compensation will be given in the form of store credit.
