The Orinoco Peacock Bass (Cichla orinocensis) is one of the most striking and powerful freshwater predators available in the aquarium trade. Native to the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela and Colombia, this species is renowned for its vivid coloration, aggressive feeding response, and commanding presence. Juveniles display bold vertical barring and eye-catching ocelli (false eye spots), while adults develop more subdued but regal tones with a pronounced nuchal hump in dominant males.
Highly prized by advanced aquarists and predatory fish enthusiasts, C. orinocensis offers both beauty and intensity, making it a true centerpiece species in large aquaria.
Orinoco Peacock Bass require pristine, well-oxygenated water and a spacious environment to thrive. As fast-growing and highly active fish, they demand excellent filtration and consistent maintenance.
Frequent water changes and strong filtration are essential due to their heavy bio-load. Secure lids are recommended, as they are powerful jumpers.
Carnivorous by nature, C. orinocensis thrives on a protein-rich diet.
A varied diet promotes optimal health and coloration. Avoid feeder fish from unreliable sources to reduce disease risk.
Due to their large adult size and active swimming behavior, these fish require substantial space.
Aquascaping should allow for open swimming areas with minimal obstructions. Strong filtration and high oxygenation are critical.
Tank mates must be chosen with extreme care.
Even with appropriate tank mates, aggression is always a possibility, especially as they mature.
The Orinoco Peacock Bass is a breathtaking and formidable species best suited for experienced aquarists with the space and resources to meet its demands. When properly cared for, it becomes an impressive, interactive showpiece unlike any other freshwater fish.
