DESCRIPTION

Needle Nose Gar (Xenentodon cancila)

The Needle Nose Gar (Xenentodon cancila) is a unique freshwater predator native to South and Southeast Asia. Known for its extremely long, slender body and needle-like jaws filled with sharp teeth, this fascinating species is built for hunting. Its silver coloration and streamlined body allow it to blend into its surroundings while waiting to ambush prey near the water’s surface. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Needle Nose Gar is generally peaceful toward fish too large to swallow.

Maximum Size: 14–16 inches

Minimum Tank Size: 150+ gallons recommended for adults, with a long aquarium providing plenty of surface swimming space.

Tank Mates: Best kept with similarly sized, peaceful to moderately aggressive fish that cannot fit into its mouth. Suitable companions may include larger bichirs, peaceful catfish, and other appropriately sized predatory species. They can also be kept in groups with adequate space.

Diet: Carnivore. Needle Nose Gars naturally feed on smaller fish, shrimp, and aquatic insects. They often prefer live foods initially but can sometimes be trained to accept frozen shrimp, krill, and other meaty foods.

Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires a spacious aquarium with open swimming areas, stable water conditions, and a tightly secured lid. Needle Nose Gars are powerful jumpers and can easily injure themselves if startled.

Why We Love Them: The Needle Nose Gar offers a truly unique appearance that sets it apart from most freshwater predators. Its long jaws, sleek body, and lightning-fast strikes make it an incredible fish to observe. For hobbyists looking for an unusual surface-dwelling predator, the Needle Nose Gar is an excellent addition to a properly sized aquarium.
