DESCRIPTION

The L330 Watermelon Royal Pleco is a premium, highly sought-after panaque known for its bold striped pattern resembling a watermelon rind. With its powerful build and constant wood-grazing behavior, this species is both a visual centerpiece and an active bottom dweller.

Native to South America, this pleco is famous for its unique ability to digest wood, making it a must-have for collectors who appreciate rare and functional fish.

Max Size

  • 12–16 inches in captivity
  • Thick-bodied and heavy once fully grown

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 125 gallons
  • Recommended: 180+ gallons for long-term care
  • Requires strong filtration due to heavy waste production

Tank Mates

  • Compatible with large, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish
  • Great with:
    • Arowana
    • Datnoids
    • Large cichlids
    • Catfish
  • Avoid other plecos unless the tank is very large

Diet

Primarily herbivorous with specialized needs:

  • Driftwood (essential) – aids digestion
  • Algae wafers and sinking pellets
  • Fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato)
  • Occasional protein (shrimp, wafers)

👉 Constant grazer—will spend most of its time rasping on wood and surfaces

Care & Behavior

  • Peaceful but can be territorial toward other bottom dwellers
  • Nocturnal tendencies—more active at night
  • Requires driftwood in the tank at all times
  • Produces a lot of waste—strong filtration is a must

Why We Love Them

  • Unique “watermelon” striping pattern
  • Rare L-number pleco with high collector value
  • Functional algae and wood grazer
  • Adds depth and activity to large aquariums

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Needs driftwood to stay healthy—non-negotiable
  • Heavy bioload—overfilter your system
  • Can rasp on soft surfaces if underfed
  • Grows large—plan accordingly

A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface.
