The L233 / LDA009 Golden Maculatus Pleco is a bold, spotted Hypostomus species known for its golden-bronze base color covered in rich dark maculated patterning. As it matures, the contrast deepens, giving this pleco a rugged, river-monster aesthetic that fits perfectly into larger South American or predator-style aquariums.
Unlike smaller, delicate plecos, this species grows into a substantial, muscular fish with strong armor plating and a powerful sucker mouth designed for grazing wood and hard surfaces. Itβs hardy, adaptable, and built for larger systems with strong filtration.
This is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a durable, visually striking pleco that can hold its own in semi-aggressive or predator tanks.
Typically reaches 12β16 inches
Thick-bodied with strong finnage and armored plates
Minimum: 125 gallons
Recommended: 180 gallons or larger for full-grown specimens
Large footprint preferred over tall tanks
Aquascape Tips:
Driftwood is essential (aids digestion)
Smooth rocks and stable dΓ©cor
Open bottom space
Strong filtration and aeration
Because of their size and waste production, oversized filtration is highly recommended.
Temperature: 74β82Β°F (23β28Β°C)
pH: 6.0β7.8
GH: 4β15 dGH
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Ideally under 20β30 ppm
They are hardy but thrive best in stable, clean, well-oxygenated water.
Golden Maculatus Plecos are generally peaceful but territorial toward other bottom dwellers, especially similar plecos.
Good tank mates:
Larger South American cichlids
Silver dollars
Large tetras
Predator fish that ignore bottom dwellers
Other robust, mid-to-top swimmers
Avoid:
Small bottom-dwelling fish
Multiple large plecos in undersized tanks
Extremely aggressive cichlids that may harass them
In spacious aquariums, they coexist well with appropriately sized tank mates.
Primarily omnivorous with a heavy plant-based component.
High-quality algae wafers
Sinking pellets
Fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach)
Occasional protein (shrimp, bloodworms)
Driftwood should always be available to support digestion.
The L233 / LDA009 Golden Maculatus Pleco is a hardy, large-format pleco ideal for serious aquarists running big South American or predator-style systems. With proper space and care, it becomes a long-lived, impressive bottom-dwelling centerpiece.
