The black-and-white legend of the Xingu
The L046 Zebra Pleco is one of the most iconic and sought-after plecos in the world. Jet-black bands layered over a crisp white base create a striking zebra pattern that looks almost graphic in contrast. No two patterns are identical — each fish carries its own signature striping, making every specimen a true collector’s piece.
Native to the warm, fast-flowing waters of Brazil’s Rio Xingu, Hypancistrus zebra is adapted to rocky crevices and highly oxygenated currents. Unlike common algae-eating plecos, the Zebra Pleco is a carnivorous micro-predator, preferring protein-rich foods over plant matter. It spends much of the day tucked into caves, emerging at dusk or feeding time, where its pattern glows under subdued lighting.
Reaching only 3–4 inches, this is a small pleco with massive status in the hobby. Due to habitat loss and export restrictions from Brazil, L046 has become a symbol of responsible breeding and conservation within the aquarium community.
