Henlei Stingray — Potamotrygon henlei
The black diamond of the Amazon
The Henlei Stingray is one of the most striking freshwater rays in the world — a species that defines contrast and commands attention without movement. Native to the Rio Tocantins system in Brazil, this ray displays an ultra-dark velvet black base covered in bold white to golden spots that glow under aquarium lighting. Each individual carries a unique pattern, making every Henlei a living fingerprint of the river it came from.
Unlike many fish that dominate through speed or aggression, a Henlei rules through presence. As it glides across the substrate, the entire tank seems to slow down. The disc lifts and settles like a hovering aircraft while the tail follows with quiet control. Watching one feed is equally impressive — it gently lifts the sand and inhales food with precision, showing intelligence and awareness rather than chaos.
Growing into the 16–20+ inch disc range (with tail far longer), this is a true centerpiece animal suited for large, well-filtered aquariums with fine sand substrate. They pair exceptionally well with arowana, datnoids, large peaceful cichlids, bichirs, and monster catfish that respect bottom territory.
Henlei rays are prized not only for appearance but for demeanor — alert, responsive, and surprisingly interactive. Many quickly recognize their keeper and will approach the glass at feeding time, creating a connection few fish can match.
At Predatory Fins we consider certain fish status symbols of the hobby — the Henlei is one of them.
Elegant, powerful, and unmistakable.
