DESCRIPTION

Golden Arrow Mahseer (Neolissochilus benasi)

The Golden Arrow Mahseer is a rare and visually striking riverine species prized for its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and brilliant golden coloration. Native to fast-flowing waters of Southeast Asia, this powerful fish is built for speed, endurance, and constant movement—making it a true standout in large, high-flow aquariums.

Its streamlined profile, metallic gold sheen, and sharply defined fins give it an “arrow-like” appearance in motion, living up to its name. Under proper lighting, the gold tones intensify, creating a shimmering, almost reflective effect as it patrols the tank.

Highly active and intelligent, the Golden Arrow Mahseer is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide the space and water movement it requires.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 180 gallons is recommended for juveniles, though 300+ gallons is ideal for long-term care. These fish require long tanks with strong current and open swimming space.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein-rich foods:

  • High-quality pellets (staple diet)
  • Frozen foods such as shrimp, bloodworms, and fish fillets
  • Live foods (insects, worms) for enrichment
  • Occasional vegetable matter

Feed 1–2 times daily in moderate portions.

Tank Mates:
Best kept with similarly sized, active species:

  • Compatible: Large barbs, datnoids, arowanas, large catfish, other riverine species
  • Use Caution: Semi-aggressive fish that may compete for space
  • Avoid: Small fish (may be eaten), slow or timid species

They do best in groups when space allows, which helps reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behavior.

Tank Setup:

  • Strong flow and high oxygenation are essential
  • Open swimming space with minimal obstructions
  • Smooth rocks and river-style decor recommended
  • Tight-fitting lid due to jumping ability

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72–78°F
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Pristine water quality with strong filtration required

Additional Notes

  • Maximum Size: ~18–24+ inches
  • Lifespan: 10+ years
  • Behavior: Active, fast-swimming, semi-aggressive
  • Growth Rate: Fast under proper conditions
