DESCRIPTION

Elephantnose Fish (Gnathonemus petersii)

Description:
The Elephantnose Fish (Gnathonemus petersii) is one of the most unique and fascinating freshwater species available in the hobby. Named for its elongated, trunk-like mouth, this fish uses a specialized electro-sensory system to navigate its environment and locate food, making it truly unlike any other aquarium fish. Its sleek, dark body accented with subtle white markings gives it an elegant and mysterious appearance. Known for its intelligence and sensitivity, the Elephantnose Fish is a rewarding centerpiece for hobbyists looking for something truly different and engaging.

Diet:
Carnivorous.

  • Prefers worms, insect larvae, and other small meaty foods
  • Enjoys bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp
  • Can be trained onto frozen foods and some sinking pellets
  • Feed daily in small portions

Behavior:

  • Peaceful but shy and sensitive
  • Nocturnal—most active during low light conditions
  • Uses electrical signals to communicate and navigate
  • Can be territorial with its own kind unless kept in larger groups

Max Size:

  • Up to 8–10 inches (20–25 cm)

Tank Mates:

  • Best with peaceful, non-aggressive species
  • Avoid fin-nippers and highly aggressive fish
  • Can be kept alone or in groups if the tank is large enough and well-structured

Tank Size:

  • Minimum: 55–75 gallons
  • Soft substrate recommended to protect its delicate “trunk”
  • Provide plenty of hiding spots and dim lighting
  • Stable water conditions and excellent water quality are essential

will cover shipping cost and live arrival guarantee outside of our normal shipping policy. If shipment is late or damaged, but fish is alive, then you can claim for the shipping cost. All claims must be made within 2 hrs of receiving the package. A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface. Claims may be denied if you fail to provide sufficient proof that clearly demonstrates loss. All compensation will be given in the form of store credit.
