DESCRIPTION

Semilabeo obscurus – Dusky Barbel

The Dusky Barbel is a powerful, riverine cyprinid known for its streamlined body, dark metallic sheen, and strong swimming ability. Native to fast-flowing Asian river systems, this species is built for current — displaying a muscular profile, thick lips adapted for grazing, and constant mid-to-bottom level movement.

While not commonly seen in the mainstream hobby, the Dusky Barbel is an impressive addition to large, high-flow aquariums. It is hardy, active, and thrives in spacious systems that replicate river conditions. Best suited for experienced aquarists, this species appreciates clean, oxygen-rich water and plenty of room to move.

In the right setup, it becomes a dynamic, river-style showcase fish.

Adult Size

  • Typically reaches 10–14 inches, occasionally larger

  • Strong-bodied, fast swimmer

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 125 gallons

  • Recommended: 180 gallons or larger

  • Long tanks preferred to accommodate active swimming behavior

Aquascape Tips:

  • Moderate to strong current

  • Smooth rocks and driftwood

  • Open swimming space

  • Secure lid (active species)

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • pH: 6.5–7.8

  • GH: 5–15 dGH

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: Keep under 20–30 ppm

They require well-oxygenated water and strong biological filtration due to their size and activity.

Tank Mates

Dusky Barbel are generally peaceful but can be boisterous due to their size and activity.

Good tank mates:

  • Large peaceful barbs

  • Robust rainbowfish

  • Larger loaches

  • Non-aggressive medium-to-large cichlids

  • Other similarly sized riverine species

Avoid:

  • Small community fish

  • Slow-moving or delicate species

  • Highly aggressive territorial fish

  • Long-finned fish that may be stressed by constant activity

Best housed with active, similarly sized fish that appreciate flowing water conditions.

Feeding

Omnivorous grazer with a strong appetite.

  • High-quality sinking pellets

  • Vegetable matter (spirulina, blanched greens, zucchini)

  • Algae wafers

  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)

Providing plant-based foods helps maintain proper digestive health and coloration.

The Dusky Barbel is ideal for aquarists building a large river-style aquarium who want a hardy, strong-bodied species with constant motion and subtle, natural coloration. With proper space and current, this fish becomes a commanding and energetic presence in any large system.
