DESCRIPTION

Burbot — Lota lota

The freshwater cod of the North

The Burbot is one of the most unusual freshwater predators you can keep — the only true freshwater member of the cod family. With a long eel-like body, mottled brown camouflage, and a single chin barbel, Lota lota looks like it belongs in the ocean depths rather than a river system. Its cryptic pattern allows it to blend perfectly into rocky bottoms and submerged wood, where it waits for nightfall.

Native to cold lakes and rivers across North America, Europe, and Asia, the Burbot is a true cold-water species. It is most active in cooler temperatures and becomes a stealthy nocturnal hunter once the lights dim. Rather than chasing prey in open water, it patrols the bottom slowly and deliberately before striking with surprising speed.

Growing to 24–36+ inches in proper conditions, this species is best suited for chilled aquariums or indoor pond-style setups with ample space and oxygenation.

Aquarium Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 300 gallons (8 ft+ length recommended)

  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Décor: Rock piles, driftwood, shaded areas for daytime shelter

  • Lighting: Dim to moderate

  • Cover: Secure lid recommended

  • Chiller: Required in most indoor setups

Tank Mates

Best with large, cold-water compatible species:

  • Large cold-water catfish

  • Larger trout or char species (system dependent)

  • Other robust, cool-water fish of similar size

Avoid tropical species and small fish.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 40–65°F (4–18°C) — prefers cold water

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Hardness: Moderate

  • Filtration: Strong biological filtration

  • Oxygen: Very high dissolved oxygen essential

  • Water Quality: Pristine, well-oxygenated, cool water critical

Diet

Carnivorous:

  • Fish fillet

  • Shrimp

  • Worms

  • Appropriately sized whole fish (frozen/thawed preferred)

A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface.
