DESCRIPTION

Siniperca roulei is one of the rarest members of the Chinese perch family, highly prized by collectors for its unique patterning and elusive nature in the aquarium trade. Like its relatives, this species is a stealth-based ambush predator—using camouflage and patience to strike prey with explosive speed.

Rarely seen compared to S. chuatsi or S. kneri, this species is perfect for advanced hobbyists looking to own something truly uncommon in the Asian predator category.

Max Size

  • 8–12 inches in captivity
  • Compact, muscular predator

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 55–75 gallons (juvenile)
  • Recommended: 100–125+ gallons for adults
  • Provide structure with open ambush zones

Tank Mates

  • Highly predatory
  • Best with:
    • Similar-sized, robust fish
    • Other predators (with caution)
  • Avoid:
    • Small fish (will be eaten)
    • Passive or slow-moving species

Diet

Strict carnivore:

  • Live feeder fish (often required initially)
  • Frozen/thawed fish and shrimp (with training)
  • Rarely accepts pellets

👉 Feeding can be challenging—experience recommended

Care & Behavior

  • Ambush predator—prefers dim lighting and hiding spots
  • Can be shy during acclimation
  • Requires strong filtration and stable water
  • Low activity with sudden bursts during feeding

Why We Love Them
