Axanthic Marble Florida Gar — Lepisosteus platyrhincus
Silver armor with prehistoric instinct
The Axanthic Marble Florida Gar takes one of North America’s most primitive predators and gives it a striking cold-toned appearance. Unlike the typical olive and golden coloration of standard Florida gars, this axanthic morph shows reduced yellow pigmentation, creating shades of silver, gray, cream, and charcoal with irregular marble-like patterning across the body and fins. Under aquarium lighting, the scales can take on a clean metallic sheen that makes the armored body and elongated snout stand out even more.
Native to slow rivers, swamps, and marsh systems of the southeastern United States, Lepisosteus platyrhincus is a classic ambush predator. It often hovers near the surface or alongside structure, remaining nearly motionless before striking prey with sudden speed. Like other gars, it possesses a vascular swim bladder that allows it to gulp atmospheric air, an ancient adaptation that helps it survive in low-oxygen environments.
Growing to approximately 24–36+ inches, the Axanthic Marble Florida Gar is best suited for serious large-aquarium or indoor pond setups. Florida gars remain more manageable than some of the giant gar species while still offering the same unmistakable prehistoric appearance.

Tank Mates
Best kept with large, confident species such as:
- Datnoids
- Large catfish
- Bichirs
- Arowana, where space allows
- Large peaceful cichlids
Avoid small fish, as they may be viewed as prey. Extremely aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates should also be avoided.

Diet
Carnivorous. Offer a varied diet including:
