Originating from China, koi are selectively bred, highly developed ornamental carp. While the foundation of koi breeding began in Japan decades ago, modern breeding programs across Asia—particularly in China—now produce koi of exceptional quality, color, and pattern diversity.

Koi varieties are distinguished by three primary traits: coloration, pattern, and scalation.

Common koi colors include white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular and prestigious group is the Gosanke, which includes:

• Taisho Sanke (red, white, and black)
• Showa (black-based with red and white)
