DESCRIPTION

Argentine Rainbow Humphead Geophagus — Gymnogeophagus lipokarenos

Cool-water color with South American character

The Argentine Rainbow Humphead Geophagus is a seasonal showpiece that blends subtle river tones with flashes of unexpected color. A silver to champagne base shimmers with blue and green iridescence, while mature males develop warm orange, red, and turquoise highlights across the face, fins, and flanks. During breeding season, the coloration intensifies dramatically, and dominant males form a pronounced nuchal hump that gives the species its “Humphead” name.

Native to cooler river systems of Argentina and Uruguay, Gymnogeophagus lipokarenos differs from tropical Geophagus by thriving in lower temperatures. Like other eartheater-type cichlids, they constantly sift sand through their gills in search of food, creating a natural, active riverbed effect in the aquarium.

Growing to 6–8 inches, they are peaceful for their size and display structured social hierarchies rather than chaotic aggression. When kept in groups, they establish dominance through display and posture instead of nonstop fighting.

Aquarium Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (125+ gallons recommended for groups)

  • Group Size: 4 or more preferred
