DESCRIPTION

Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum altum)

The Altum Angelfish is widely regarded as the most majestic and sought-after of all angelfish species. Native to the Orinoco River Basin, Pterophyllum altum stands apart from standard scalare varieties with its taller body, deeper profile, and distinctive concave forehead—giving it a more dramatic, commanding presence.

Featuring bold vertical striping over a silvery base with subtle red and blue highlights, Altums display a natural elegance that is unmatched in the freshwater hobby. Their extended dorsal and anal fins create an impressive vertical span, making them true centerpiece fish in large, well-designed aquariums.

Unlike most domesticated angelfish, Altums are more sensitive and demand higher water quality and stability. They are best suited for experienced aquarists who can replicate their natural blackwater environment.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 55 gallons is required for a small group, but 75–125+ gallons is strongly recommended for long-term success. Height is critical—tall aquariums allow Altums to reach their full potential, often exceeding 10–12 inches in height.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets (primary staple)
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp
  • Live foods (blackworms, small feeder fish, insects) for conditioning and natural feeding response
  • Supplement with occasional plant-based foods

Feed small portions 1–2 times daily. Newly acquired Altums may be shy feeders and require patience.

Tank Mates:
Best kept with peaceful, similarly sized species:

  • Compatible: Larger tetras (cardinal, rummynose), peaceful cichlids, discus, Corydoras, plecos
  • Use Caution: Other angelfish species (may hybridize or compete), semi-aggressive fish
  • Avoid: Small fish that can be eaten, aggressive species, and fin-nippers

Altums do best in groups of 5+ when possible, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural behavior.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 78–84°F
  • pH: 4.5–6.5 (prefers acidic conditions)
  • Water Hardness: Very soft
  • Requires pristine water quality, low nitrates, and stable parameters
  • Benefits from tannins (driftwood, botanicals) and subdued lighting
