DESCRIPTION

Albino Red Cap Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Albino Red Cap Angelfish is a striking freshwater showpiece, known for its glowing white body and bold red/orange crown. This selectively bred Pterophyllum scalare retains the iconic angelfish shape—tall, laterally compressed bodies with long, flowing fins—while showcasing the unique contrast of albinism and its signature “red cap.”

Lacking dark pigmentation, these angelfish display a clean, almost luminous appearance under aquarium lighting. As they mature, the red cap intensifies, making them a true focal point in any display tank.

While graceful in movement, Albino Red Caps are still cichlids with mild predatory instincts. They establish hierarchy, especially in groups, and may prey on smaller fish. Best kept in thoughtfully selected communities or species-focused setups.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 29 gallons for a single specimen is recommended, but a 40+ gallon tank is ideal for pairs or groups. Height is more important than footprint—angelfish thrive in tall aquariums that accommodate their vertical finnage.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein-rich foods. For optimal health and coloration, provide a varied diet:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (staple)
  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp)
  • Live foods (blackworms, feeder shrimp) for conditioning and enrichment
  • Occasional vegetable matter (spirulina-based foods)

Avoid overfeeding and ensure all food is appropriately sized.

Tank Mates:
Choose tank mates carefully due to their semi-aggressive and predatory nature:

  • Compatible: Larger tetras (e.g., Buenos Aires, bleeding heart), peaceful cichlids, gouramis, rainbowfish, Corydoras, plecos
  • Use Caution: Other angelfish (may form pairs and become territorial), barbs (if not fin-nippers)
  • Avoid: Very small fish (neon tetras, guppies), shrimp, and fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, some danios)

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76–82°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Maintain clean, stable conditions with regular water changes
