Albino Mekong Arrowhead Puffer — Pao suvattii
The buried ambush predator
The Albino Mekong Arrowhead Puffer is one of the most unique freshwater predators in the hobby. Built like a living trap, this species has a broad triangular head and forward-facing eyes designed entirely for ambush hunting. The albino form replaces natural camouflage with pale cream coloration and ruby eyes, making a fish normally hidden in sand suddenly visible — right up until it disappears again beneath the substrate.
Native to sandy riverbeds of the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems, Pao suvattii spends most of its life buried with only its eyes exposed. It doesn’t chase prey… it waits. When a fish, shrimp, or worm passes overhead, the puffer launches upward and inhales it instantly before settling back into the sand as if nothing happened. Feeding time is less like watching a fish eat and more like watching a trap trigger.
Reaching 5–7 inches, they are sedentary but extremely aware, tracking movement outside the tank even while buried.
Minimum Tank Size: 40–55 gallons (larger preferred for stability)
Substrate: Fine soft sand (mandatory — they must be able to bury fully)
Flow: Low to moderate
Décor: Open sand areas with minimal hard décor; avoid sharp rocks
Lighting: Dim to moderate for natural behavior
Best kept alone (species tank recommended).
Anything that passes near the bottom will eventually be eaten. Even fast fish become targets at night. This is a display predator, not a community fish.
Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to medium
Filtration: Strong biological filtration, low current
Water Quality: Very important — puffers are sensitive to poor conditions
Carnivore requiring meaty foods:
Shrimp / prawns
Worms
Snails (important for beak wear)
Pieces of fish or shellfish
