DESCRIPTION

Albino Blue Frontosa (Cyphotilapia frontosa)

The Albino Blue Frontosa is a rare and highly desirable variant of the legendary Frontosa cichlid, combining the species’ iconic shape and calm dominance with the striking brightness of albino genetics. This variety features a creamy white to soft yellow body, vivid red eyes, and subtle blue undertones that can appear under the right lighting—giving it a clean yet exotic look.

Known for their signature nuchal hump and bold, slow-moving presence, Frontosas are one of the most recognizable fish from Lake Tanganyika. The albino form adds a luminous, almost glowing quality that sets it apart from traditional blue and striped variants, making it a true centerpiece fish.

Despite their peaceful demeanor, Frontosas are still predatory cichlids and will consume smaller tank mates when given the opportunity.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 75 gallons is suitable for juveniles, though 125–180+ gallons is strongly recommended for adult groups. Frontosas thrive in groups of 5–8+, which helps reduce stress and promotes natural behavior.

Diet:
Carnivorous with a preference for high-quality protein:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets (staple diet)
  • Frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and silversides
  • Occasional shrimp or fish fillets as treats
  • Avoid fatty feeder fish to prevent digestive issues

Feed 1–2 times daily in moderate portions.

Tank Mates:
Best kept with calm, similarly sized species:

  • Compatible: Other Frontosas, large peaceful African cichlids, Synodontis catfish
  • Use Caution: Semi-aggressive African cichlids that may outcompete or stress them
  • Avoid: Small fish (will be eaten), aggressive or hyperactive species

Frontosas prefer a slower-paced, low-aggression environment.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75–80°F
  • pH: 7.8–9.0
  • Water Hardness: Moderate to hard (alkaline)
  • Strong filtration and stable parameters are essential
  • Moderate flow with good oxygenation

Additional Notes

  • Maximum Size: ~10–12 inches
  • Lifespan: 10–15+ years
  • Behavior: Calm, slow-moving, territorial when breeding
  • Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; best achieved in colony setups
