DESCRIPTION

African Crimson Sky Mahseer — Labeobarbus malagarisi

High-current power with a flash of crimson

The African Crimson Sky Mahseer is a muscular, river-forged cyprinid that combines endurance with vivid color. A polished silver-to-steel body reflects light like chrome, while the fins ignite with deep crimson to scarlet tones — especially the tail and anal fins — creating the “Crimson Sky” effect when the fish turns in current. Thick, armor-like scales and a broad head give it a powerful presence, while the forked tail reveals its true nature: a relentless swimmer built for flow.

Native to fast, oxygen-rich African river systems, Labeobarbus malagarisi thrives in movement. Unlike ambush predators, this species patrols open water lanes, reacting instantly at feeding time. In groups, they move with coordinated strength, transforming large aquariums into dynamic river scenes.

Growing to 24–36+ inches in proper conditions, this is a serious, long-term species best suited for very large aquariums or indoor pond systems.

Aquarium Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 300 gallons (8 ft+ length recommended; pond setups ideal long-term)

  • Substrate: Sand, smooth gravel, or river rock

  • Flow: Moderate to strong current

  • Décor: Open swimming lanes with rock structure along edges

  • Lighting: Moderate to bright (enhances silver and crimson contrast)

  • Cover: Secure lid required — strong jumper

  • Oxygen: Very high dissolved oxygen essential

  • Filtration: Oversized biological filtration required

Tank Mates

Best with other large, fast, confident species:

  • Large catfish

  • Datnoids

  • Arowana (space dependent)

  • Large barbs

  • Other robust riverine fish

Avoid slow, delicate species and small fish.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Hardness: Moderate

  • Water Quality: Pristine, highly oxygenated water critical

Diet

Omnivorous with strong appetite:

  • High-quality large pellets

  • Shrimp and prawn

  • Insects
