DESCRIPTION

Rainbow Tetra (Hemigrammus skolioplatus)

The Rainbow Tetra (Hemigrammus skolioplatus) is a vibrant and energetic schooling fish known for its shimmering, iridescent coloration that reflects hues of blue, green, and subtle rainbow tones under proper lighting. Native to South American river systems, this species adds constant motion and brilliance to community aquariums.

Its streamlined body and active swimming behavior make it an excellent choice for midwater display, especially when kept in groups. When maintained in optimal conditions, their colors intensify, creating a stunning visual effect in planted or natural-style aquascapes.

Care

Rainbow Tetras are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for a wide range of aquarists.

  • Temperature: 72–80Β°F (22–27Β°C)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderate
  • Behavior: Peaceful, schooling
  • Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Best kept in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. Regular water changes and stable parameters will keep them thriving.

Diet

Omnivorous and easy to feed.

  • High-quality flake or micro pellets
  • Frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms)
  • Occasional live foods

A varied diet enhances coloration and overall health.

Tank Size

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons
  • Recommended: 30+ gallons for larger schools

Provide open swimming space with plants or dΓ©cor along the edges. Moderate lighting helps bring out their iridescence.

Tank Mates

Ideal for peaceful community aquariums.

  • Suitable: Other small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids
  • Avoid: Large or aggressive fish

Their peaceful nature makes them compatible with a wide range of similarly sized species.

Summary

The Rainbow Tetra is a colorful, active schooling fish that brings life and movement to any freshwater aquarium. Easy to care for and visually rewarding, it’s an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.
