DESCRIPTION

Polkadot Synodontis — Synodontis angelicus
The starry night catfish of the Congo

The Polkadot Synodontis is one of the most iconic African catfish in the hobby. Deep charcoal to jet-black body covered in crisp white spots gives it a night-sky appearance, while long trailing fins add elegance rarely seen in bottom dwellers. Under subdued lighting the contrast becomes dramatic — the fish seems to glow as it moves through shadows.

Native to the Congo River Basin, Synodontis angelicus spends daylight hours tucked into caves, wood, or rockwork, then becomes active at dusk. Like many Synodontis, it often swims upside-down beneath structure, using sensitive barbels to probe surfaces and locate food. When the lights dim, a quiet tank suddenly comes alive with motion.

Growing to around 7–9 inches, this species is hardy and well suited for African cichlid communities and other robust tank mates. Its armored body and locking spines allow it to coexist safely with assertive fish while it scavenges leftovers and eagerly accepts pellets, frozen foods, and meaty offerings.

Over time they become confident and routine-oriented, emerging earlier in the day once comfortable and quickly recognizing feeding schedules.

Insurance

will cover shipping cost and live arrival guarantee outside of our normal shipping policy. This means we will compensate you for any fish that died in transit and the associated shipping costs that occurred from shipping delays, damage or loss of package by shipping carrier. If shipment is late or damaged, but fish is alive, then you can claim for the shipping cost. All claims must be made within 2 hrs of receiving the package. A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface. Claims may be denied if you fail to provide sufficient proof that clearly demonstrates loss. All compensation will be given in the form of store credit.
