DESCRIPTION

Orange Striped Synodontis — Synodontis flavitaeniatus
African nocturnal scavenger with unmistakable style

The Orange Striped Synodontis is one of the most striking catfish to come out of Central Africa’s Congo Basin. Jet-dark to chocolate body tones are broken by bold golden-orange horizontal striping that runs clean from head to tail, giving the fish a sleek, almost electric appearance under aquarium lighting. At night those stripes glow, making this species a true after-hours centerpiece.

Growing to around 7–9 inches, S. flavitaeniatus is built for life among submerged wood and rock. Like many Synodontis, it spends the day tucked into caves or driftwood, then becomes highly active once lights dim. Long sensitive barbels probe every surface while the fish glides along the bottom — and often upside-down beneath structures — searching for food. Watching them patrol a tank at dusk feels like observing a completely different aquarium come alive.

Despite their predatory look, they are generally peaceful and highly compatible with African cichlids and other robust community fish. They help clean up leftover food while still eagerly accepting pellets, frozen foods, and meaty offerings. Their armored bodies and spines allow them to coexist safely with larger, more assertive tank mates.

Hardy and adaptable once established, they thrive in tanks with hiding places, moderate current, and dim retreat areas. A group adds even more personality, interacting and competing for caves while rarely showing serious aggression.

Insurance

will cover shipping cost and live arrival guarantee outside of our normal shipping policy. This means we will compensate you for any fish that died in transit and the associated shipping costs that occurred from shipping delays, damage or loss of package by shipping carrier. If shipment is late or damaged, but fish is alive, then you can claim for the shipping cost. All claims must be made within 2 hrs of receiving the package. A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface. Claims may be denied if you fail to provide sufficient proof that clearly demonstrates loss. All compensation will be given in the form of store credit.
