Originating from China, koi are essentially highly developed, domesticated carp, with iconic colors stemming from selective breeding efforts. These efforts started in Japan many decades ago, but now are being produced at the highest level of quality in many Asian countries, especially in China. 

Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation.

Some of the major colors are white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Sanke and Showa varieties. There are also non gosanke varieties which consists of every type other then gosanke.
