DESCRIPTION

Trinity Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus)

The Trinity Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) is a striking North American predator known for its elongated body, armored scales, and distinctive pattern of dark spots across a lighter background. This regional variant, often associated with Texas river systems such as the Trinity River, is especially prized for its bold markings and streamlined appearance.

A true living fossil, spotted gars have remained largely unchanged for millions of years. Their torpedo-shaped bodies and needle-like jaws are perfectly adapted for ambush predation, while their ability to breathe atmospheric air allows them to thrive in a variety of conditions. Elegant yet formidable, this species makes a unique and commanding addition to large aquariums.

Care

Spotted gars are hardy but require space, stability, and proper husbandry.

  • Temperature: 68–78Β°F (20–26Β°C)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Water Hardness: Moderate
  • Behavior: Predatory, generally non-aggressive toward similarly sized fish
  • Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced

A secure, tight-fitting lid is critical, as gars are powerful jumpers. Provide strong filtration and maintain excellent water quality.

Diet

Carnivorous ambush predators that prefer meaty foods.

  • Frozen/thawed fish (silversides, smelt)
  • Shrimp and other aquatic invertebrates
  • Can be trained onto prepared carnivore foods over time

Avoid frequent use of live feeder fish due to disease risk and poor nutritional value.

Tank Size

This species grows large and requires significant swimming space.

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
  • Recommended: 240+ gallons for long-term care

Long tanks with ample horizontal swimming space are preferred over tall setups. Keep dΓ©cor minimal to prevent injury.

Tank Mates

Compatible with large, robust species that will not fit in its mouth.

  • Suitable: Large cichlids, datnoids, big catfish, arowana
  • Avoid: Small fish, overly aggressive or fin-nipping species

Despite their predatory nature, spotted gars are relatively calm and do best with non-harassing tank mates.

Summary

The Trinity Spotted Gar is a prehistoric predator that combines unique appearance with fascinating behavior. Best suited for large, well-planned aquariums, it rewards experienced aquarists with a truly one-of-a-kind display fish.
