DESCRIPTION

The Amber Mandarin Fish (Siniperca obscura) is a rare and lesser-known member of the Chinese perch family, prized for its warm amber tones and subtle camouflage pattern. Like other Siniperca species, it is a stealth-based ambush predator—remaining motionless before launching lightning-fast strikes on prey.

Highly uncommon in the aquarium trade, this species is ideal for advanced hobbyists and collectors looking to add something truly unique to an Asian predator setup.

Max Size

  • 8–12 inches in captivity
  • Compact, muscular build

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 55–75 gallons (juvenile)
  • Recommended: 100–125+ gallons for adults
  • Provide structure with hiding areas and open ambush zones

Tank Mates

  • Highly predatory
  • Best with:
    • Similar-sized, robust fish
    • Other predators (with caution)
  • Avoid:
    • Small fish (will be eaten)
    • Slow or passive species

Diet

Strict carnivore:

  • Live feeder fish (often required initially)
  • Frozen/thawed fish, shrimp, and worms
  • Rarely accepts pellets

👉 Feeding can require patience—best for experienced keepers

Care & Behavior

  • Ambush predator—prefers dim lighting and cover
  • Can be shy during acclimation
  • Requires excellent water quality and strong filtration
  • Low activity with sudden bursts during feeding

Why We Love Them

  • Rare and underrepresented species
  • Unique amber coloration
  • True predator behavior
  • Perfect for collector-level setups

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Not beginner-friendly
  • Often requires live feeding initially
  • Extremely predatory—tank mates must be chosen carefully
  • Sensitive to poor water quality
