DESCRIPTION

Long Nose Elephantnose Fish (Campylomormyrus numenius)

The Long Nose Elephantnose Fish is a rare and highly specialized African species known for its elongated, trunk-like snout used to detect food through weak electrical signals. Its sleek body and unique sensory abilities make it a fascinating centerpiece for advanced aquarists. Sensitive to water quality and environment, this species thrives only under stable, well-maintained conditions.

Max Size:
Up to ~9–10 inches (23–25 cm)

Tank Size:
Minimum 75–125 gallons; requires a calm, dimly lit aquarium with soft substrate and excellent water quality

Tank Mates:
Best kept with peaceful, non-aggressive fish such as:

  • Congo tetras
  • Synodontis catfish
  • Other mild-mannered African species

Avoid fin-nippers, aggressive fish, or overly active species that may outcompete it for food.

Diet:
Carnivorous; prefers:

  • Bloodworms
  • Blackworms
  • Insect larvae
  • Frozen meaty foods

May take high-quality sinking foods, but live or frozen foods are often necessary.

Additional Notes:
Highly sensitive to poor water conditions and sudden changes. Uses electroreception to navigate and feed, so avoid housing with overly competitive feeders. Best kept in groups only in very large, carefully managed aquariums, as they can be territorial.

Insurance

will cover shipping cost and live arrival guarantee outside of our normal shipping policy. This means we will compensate you for any fish that died in transit and the associated shipping costs that occurred from shipping delays, damage or loss of package by shipping carrier. If shipment is late or damaged, but fish is alive, then you can claim for the shipping cost. All claims must be made within 2 hrs of receiving the package. A video must be submitted with your claim clearly showing the fish is dead in its original packaging and a second video of the fish out of the bag and on a dry flat surface. Claims may be denied if you fail to provide sufficient proof that clearly demonstrates loss. All compensation will be given in the form of store credit.
