DESCRIPTION

Papua Black Crayfish

(Cherax sp.)

The Papua Black Crayfish is a bold and unique freshwater crayfish known for its deep black coloration and thick claws. Native to Papua, Indonesia, this species has a more natural, understated look compared to some of the brighter Cherax species, but its size, personality, and dark tones make it stand out in any aquarium setup.

Active and curious, these crayfish spend much of their time exploring, digging, and rearranging their environment. They do best in tanks with plenty of hiding places and stable water conditions.

Max Size

  • Around 4–6 inches in captivity
  • Males usually develop larger claws and a bulkier body shape

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 20 gallons for a single crayfish
  • Recommended: 30+ gallons for extra space and tankmates

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–78°F
  • pH: 6.5–7.8
  • Moderate hardness preferred
  • Clean, oxygen-rich water is important for long-term health

Diet

Omnivorous scavenger that accepts a wide range of foods:

  • Sinking pellets and wafers
  • Cut shrimp and other meaty foods
  • Frozen foods
  • Occasional vegetables like zucchini or spinach

Tank Setup

  • Sand or fine gravel substrate
  • Rocks, driftwood, and caves for shelter
  • Moderate flow and strong filtration recommended
  • Secure lid recommended since crayfish may climb

Compatibility

  • Best with peaceful midwater fish that avoid the bottom
  • Avoid keeping with slow-moving fish or small bottom dwellers
  • Can become territorial toward other crayfish if crowded

Lifespan

  • Typically 3–5 years with proper care and stable water conditions
