DESCRIPTION

The Tocantinsia piresi is a really unique South American catfish known for its dark body covered in bright cream or gold spots and long flowing fins. It has a very “wild” look to it and becomes a real centerpiece fish once it gets some size. Even though it looks aggressive, it’s actually a pretty calm species when kept with the right tank mates.

This fish does best in larger aquariums with driftwood, strong filtration, and good water movement. They spend a lot of time resting on wood or cruising around the bottom of the tank.

Max Size

Usually around 12–16 inches in captivity, sometimes larger in big systems.

Tank Size

Minimum: 125 gallons
Recommended: 180+ gallons for adults

A larger footprint is important since they get pretty bulky and active.

Tank Mates

Peaceful for their size and usually do well with other larger community fish.

Good tank mates include:

  • Silver Dollars
  • Severums
  • Geophagus
  • Larger tetras
  • Other peaceful catfish or plecos

Avoid:

  • Very aggressive fish
  • Small fish that may get stressed around them
  • Overcrowded bottom dwellers

Diet

Mostly omnivorous with a strong preference for plant-based foods and natural grazing.

Good foods include:

  • Algae wafers
  • Quality sinking pellets
  • Zucchini or cucumber
  • Spinach
  • Cut shrimp occasionally
  • Occasional protein foods in moderation

Driftwood is also important since they naturally graze on surfaces throughout the day.

👉 A varied diet helps keep them healthy and brings out their patterning.

Care & Behavior

These catfish are hardy once established, but they need clean, well-oxygenated water. They usually become more outgoing over time and can even recognize feeding routines.

They enjoy:

  • Driftwood
  • Moderate to strong flow
  • Dimmer lighting
  • Open bottom space

Because of their size, they produce a decent amount of waste, so strong filtration and regular maintenance are important.

Why We Like Them

  • Really unique spotted pattern
  • Long flowing fins
  • Peaceful personality
  • Great centerpiece fish for larger aquariums
  • Looks incredible in natural-style setups

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Needs a large tank long term
  • Strong filtration is a must
  • Can accidentally move decorations or plants around
  • Best suited for hobbyists prepared for a larger species
