DESCRIPTION

Redtail Black Ear Hybrid Catfish — Phractocephalus hemioliopterus sp.

Massive frame. Signature tail. Hybrid attitude.

The Redtail Black Ear Hybrid Catfish blends the iconic power of the Redtail Catfish with enhanced contrast and hybrid variation. Featuring the unmistakable bright red-orange caudal fin and thick, muscular body, this strain is accented by darker “black ear” markings near the gill plate that intensify its bold appearance. The broad, flat head and extended barbels give it that classic river giant profile — built for size and dominance.

Based on the genetics of Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, this hybrid carries rapid growth potential and serious mass. Unlike smaller catfish that hug the bottom, this species cruises mid-to-lower water levels with confidence. Feeding response is explosive — a powerful forward surge followed by a vacuum-like inhale.

This fish can exceed 3–4+ feet in captivity when properly housed and grows quickly. It is strictly suited for very large aquariums or indoor pond-style systems and is a long-term commitment.

Aquarium Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 500+ gallons (indoor pond strongly recommended long-term)

  • Footprint: 8 ft+ length minimum

  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Décor: Minimal heavy structure; wide open swimming lanes

  • Lighting: Moderate

  • Filtration: Oversized biological filtration essential (heavy waste producer)

  • Cover: Secure lid required

Tank Mates

Best with very large, robust species:

  • Arowana

  • Giant gouramis

  • Large datnoids

  • Massive cichlids

  • Other giant catfish

Anything small enough to fit in its mouth will be eaten. Avoid hyper-aggressive species that may cause stress or injury.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to medium

  • Water Quality: Clean and stable conditions critical

  • Oxygen: Moderate to high dissolved oxygen preferred

Carnivorous:

  • Fish fillet

  • Shrimp and prawn

  • Whole fish (frozen/thawed recommended)

  • Large carnivore pellets (once trained)
