African Rainbow Land Crab (Cardisoma armatum)

The African Rainbow Land Crab, also called the Purple Land Crab or Armadillo Land Crab, is a large terrestrial crab found in the coastal areas of West Africa. It's characterized by its distinct coloration, with its deep purple/blue shells and bright red legs. This robust and armored crab can grow up to 8 inches in length. As a burrowing crab, their large claws help to defend themselves and also dig burrows for themselves, and thus they require deep substrate. These nocturnal creatures are a great addition to any tank if you're looking for an active but not necessarily aggressive animal to house.

As a primarily terrestrial species, avoid housing these crabs with aquatic animals and keep them away from aggressive species of territorial crabs or reptiles. In optimal conditions, small reptiles and other small terrestrial crabs are great tank mates, as well as with peaceful invertebrates like snails, earthworms, and millipedes.
