DESCRIPTION

Albino Peruvian Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Albino Peruvian Altum Angelfish is a striking and elegant variant of Pterophyllum scalare, selectively bred to replicate the tall, dramatic profile of true Altum angelfish while offering the hardiness of tank-raised stock. This albino form features a luminous white to pale gold body, accented by bright red eyes and subtle iridescent highlights that shimmer under aquarium lighting.

Often referred to as β€œPeruvian Altums,” these angelfish display an elongated body shape, higher dorsal fin, and extended finnage, giving them a more vertical, commanding presence compared to standard scalare varieties. The albino genetics enhance their clean, glowing appearance, making them a standout centerpiece in any freshwater setup.

While more adaptable than true Pterophyllum altum, they still benefit from stable conditions and proper tank planning. Like all angelfish, they exhibit semi-aggressive behavior and natural predatory instincts toward smaller tank mates.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 40 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with 55–75+ gallons preferred for pairs or groups. Taller aquariums are strongly recommended to accommodate their increased height and flowing fins.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein-rich foods:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (staple diet)
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp
  • Live foods (blackworms, feeder shrimp) for conditioning and enrichment
  • Supplement with spirulina or vegetable-based foods for balance

Feed 1–2 times daily in moderate portions.

Tank Mates:
Choose tank mates carefully due to their size and temperament:

  • Compatible: Larger tetras (rummynose, cardinal), gouramis, rainbowfish, Corydoras, plecos, and other semi-peaceful species
  • Use Caution: Other angelfish (pairing and territorial behavior), semi-aggressive fish
  • Avoid: Small fish (neon tetras, guppies), shrimp, and fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras)

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 78–84Β°F
  • pH: 5.5–7.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft
  • Maintain clean, stable water with regular water changes
  • Slightly subdued lighting enhances comfort and coloration
