Our Bichir Collection features some of the most prehistoric and fascinating freshwater predators in the aquarium world. Known for their armored bodies, snake-like movement, and ancient lineage, bichirs are true living fossils that bring a raw, primal presence to any setup.
Native to the rivers and swamps of Africa, bichirs (genus Polypterus) are air-breathing predators that can gulp oxygen from the surface—making them incredibly hardy and adaptable. Their slow, stalking behavior combined with sudden explosive strikes makes them one of the most exciting species to observe in a predator tank.
At Predatory Fins, we specialize in sourcing high-quality and rare bichir species, from commonly kept varieties to hard-to-find collector pieces. Whether you’re building a monster tank or looking for a unique oddball species, bichirs are a must-have.
Why Choose Bichirs
Prehistoric, dinosaur-like appearance
Air-breathing and highly adaptable
Strong predator instincts and feeding response
Wide range of species—from smaller types to true monsters
Care Overview
Bichirs require secure, covered aquariums (they are escape artists), along with strong filtration and stable water conditions. A soft substrate and hiding areas like driftwood or caves are ideal. Most species grow large and should be housed with appropriately sized tank mates.
