DESCRIPTION

Jardini Arowana (Scleropages jardinii)

The Jardini Arowana, also known as the Australian Arowana or Gulf Saratoga, is a powerful and highly aggressive surface predator known for its metallic gold spotting and intense personality. Unlike its Asian and Silver counterparts, the Jardini is far more territorial, making it a standout choice for hobbyists seeking a bold, interactive centerpiece fish. Native to Australia and New Guinea, this species combines beauty with attitude, commanding attention in any large aquarium.

Diet

Jardini Arowanas are carnivorous surface feeders:

  • Floating pellets (can be trained; staple diet)
  • Insects (crickets, mealworms)
  • Shrimp, prawns, and fish
  • Frozen foods (krill, silversides)

A varied, protein-rich diet helps maintain color and health.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180–250 gallons
  • Water Type: Freshwater
  • Temperature: 75–82°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Setup: Long tank with open swimming space; tight-fitting lid required (excellent jumpers); moderate flow

Surface access is critical, and tanks must be securely covered.

Size

  • Current Sale Size: Typically 4–8 inches

Max Size

  • Maximum Adult Size: 24–30 inches

Tank Mates

Jardinis are notorious for aggression, making tank mate selection difficult:

  • Compatible (with caution): Large, fast, and robust fish such as datnoids, big catfish, and some rays
  • Use extreme caution: May attack or kill tank mates, even similar-sized fish
  • Avoid: Other arowanas, small fish, or passive species

Many hobbyists choose to keep them solo due to their temperament.

Temperament

Highly aggressive and territorial. Extremely interactive and aware, often recognizing their owner, but prone to dominance and tank aggression.

āš ļø Important Note

Jardini Arowanas are significantly more aggressive than most arowana species and are not ideal for community setups.
